What does he mean? Please read all?

SO my ex boyfriend now. But we were the best of friends before, like always together at school. He liked my best friend, but she never liked him, then i guess out of the blue we started developing feelings for each other. He would be complimenting me, and he's always been protective when it comes to other guys or anything. But yeah we both liked each other but he was perverted-like any teenage boy. I said i couldnt date somebody that was all perverted and gross, so he c hanged.On valentines he brought me a ton of stuff, roses, boxes of chocolates, stuffed animals, balloons, like all that stuff. He aske dme out at lunchtime, i said yes. So yeah we were great. The main problems we ever had was I like talking to guys, i have a lot of guy friends, and he would get jealous at times. Other then that we were good. We proceeded going out for 5 months, but then one day when i thought we were doing great i called him twice and texted him once saying "haha, your so mean to your girlfriend :(" i was kidding, but i guess his mom had his phone. She texted me back like 5 messages saying how we are "so young to be dating. and blah blah" but ishe'd never had a problem with it before. But yeah and so we broke up. I have a rule that i cant date an ex again so i wont be going back out with him. But i want some closure. He says he still likes me, and that his mom texting me isn't what happened, like he denies it to other people too. I'm not sure if I should continue being his friend. I still like him, a lot, because I liked him so much when we were dating. I dont know what to do. Also any tips for getting oer a hard break up??
