How do I convince my family members to give me money for my birthday?

The most thoughtful gifts are the ones where the giver has the receiver's interests in mind. Asking for money in lieu of a birthday gift is awkward and could be perceived as impolite. There's nothing wrong with talking about your plans and your hopes before your birthday -- maybe they will get the hint, knowing that's what you want and need more than anything else.
