How to invest in stock and shares?

I have been buying then papers with the stocks and shares in them, and pretending to buy stocks, just to see if I have a knack for it. And I do seem to be doing fairly well, my question is, how do you invest properly? Do I have to see a stockbroker or not, if so, how much, on average, would it cost to buy a stockbroker?
